Oumar Youm advises President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to dissolve the National Assembly amid institutional crisis

Speaking on "Grand Jury" on August 30, 2026, Youm stated that Senegal is experiencing a "deep institutional crisis" and that clarifying the political power dynamics is essential to overcome the stalemate. He asserted that he would not hesitate to dissolve the assembly if he were president, emphasizing the need to clarify the rules. The Mayor of Thiadiaye believes the current parliamentary configuration cannot coexist with the Executive given repeated confrontations, predicting the institution cannot last another three years under these conditions.

He views the disagreement over the Prime Minister's general policy statement as a symptom of a broader crisis, criticizing the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, for allegedly attempting to transform Parliament into a "center of political impetus." Youm condemned what he termed "unbridled parliamentarism" and "combat parliamentarism," arguing that these issues extend beyond mere political differences. He warned that these institutional tensions could impact Senegal's democracy, economy, and international credibility, urging the head of state to take responsibility to end what he considers a "deep" and "serious" crisis.
