Osinbajo advocates for people-centered justice reforms at NBA conference

Represented by Ade Ipaye, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, Osinbajo urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s judiciary to reposition the justice system to meet citizens' needs and experiences. He emphasized that justice reform must be driven by data, prioritization, and local ownership, starting with gathering data on justice needs, case resolution, and outcomes. Osinbajo highlighted the importance of prioritizing areas like pre-trial detention, small claims, first-response mechanisms, and legal assistance.

He also stressed that justice reform would be more effective if domesticated by state governments and embedded in institutions, rather than being solely a government initiative. The former Vice President called on the legal profession, particularly the NBA, to drive policy, professional development, and reforms that expand access to justice while maintaining quality and ethical standards. He also underscored the significance of pro bono services in widening access to justice for those who cannot afford legal representation, stating that a people-centered justice system would strengthen government, enhance the legal profession's transparency, and protect citizens.
