Xabi Alonso says Morgan Rogers signing will boost Chelsea's competitiveness
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has described Morgan Rogers as a "great signing" who will enhance the club's competitiveness, anticipating a strong link-up between Rogers and Cole Palmer. Rogers, a versatile England midfielder, was acquired from Aston Villa for £117 million, setting a new record for a British player. Alonso expressed his delight in securing the 23-year-old ahead of his first match in charge, a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers. This acquisition signals Chelsea's intent after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season. Alonso plans to integrate Rogers, Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, and Geovany Quenda into his attacking midfield, emphasizing the need for balance and stability. Chelsea reportedly pursued Rogers for two years, outbidding Arsenal. Rogers' transfer surpassed the previous British player record set by Manchester City's signing of Elliot Anderson. Alonso highlighted Rogers' flexibility, noting his ability to play in various attacking roles, particularly from the left. Rogers is not with the team for their pre-season trip to Australia, having recently helped England secure third place at the World Cup.
