Africa Online and Radio Electronic explore OneWeb satellite technology for Namibian connectivity
Africa Online and Radio Electronic Pty Ltd have signed a letter of intent to investigate using OneWeb low Earth orbit LEO satellite technology to enhance connectivity in Namibia's rural and remote regions. This agreement is not yet a commercial rollout, but rather an assessment of the technical, commercial, and operational viability of integrating satellite technology with existing telecommunications infrastructure. The companies aim to address the increasing demand for reliable, high-speed internet, which is crucial for economic growth, public service delivery, and social development. OneWeb, operated by Eutelsat, provides high-speed, low-latency broadband via its LEO satellite network. Radio Electronic's subsidiary, Blue Telecommunications, received regulatory approval earlier this year to offer OneWeb LEO satellite services in Namibia. The assessment will cover connectivity needs across various sectors, including agriculture, mining, tourism, education, healthcare, logistics, and government. Ingram van Heerden, Africa Online managing director, highlighted that satellite technology could extend connectivity to areas outside established network coverage, which is vital for Namibia's digital future.
