Obi calls for urgent government action following mass abduction in Niger State

In a statement on Thursday, Obi said reports of residents being attacked and abducted in their communities and places of worship should "shake the conscience of every Nigerian" and compel the government to act. He expressed deep disturbance over reports of the mass abduction in Borgu Local Government Area, following attacks on communities including Dekara and the abduction of worshippers during Juma’at prayers. Reports indicate that as many as 600 people, primarily women, children, and elderly persons, may have been abducted, while approximately 30 people may have been killed.

Obi called on the government to deploy intelligence-led security operations to rescue the victims, secure affected communities, and dismantle the networks enabling the attackers. The former Anambra State governor also linked the reported difficulty in the initial rescue response to infrastructure challenges, citing police complaints about difficult terrain and a collapsed bridge. Obi urged the government to prioritize the safety of Nigerians over political considerations, emphasizing that lives lost to insecurity cannot be recovered.
