Ghana Immigration Service intensifies operations against undocumented immigrants and beggars in Accra
The Ghana Immigration Service GIS has increased efforts to remove undocumented immigrants and beggars from the streets of Accra and other areas of Ghana. A video, which went viral on social media on August 29, 2026, showed immigration officers using two buses to patrol and arrest individuals. In one instance, officers ordered beggars to board a bus with their belongings, compelling women who resisted arrest to join. This operation addresses public concerns about the rising presence of beggars in Accra and associated security issues. The exercise has received commendation from some Ghanaians and stakeholders, who advocate for continued and stricter measures to tackle the problem long-term.
