Ghana to hold referendum on constitutional amendments in 2027
President John Dramani Mahama announced plans for a national referendum on proposed constitutional amendments to coincide with the 2027 District Assembly Elections. Speaking at the Resetting Ghana Tour Citizens’ Engagement in Bolgatanga, President Mahama stated that if the referendum is successful, the amendments to the entrenched clauses will be implemented. He will soon inaugurate the Constitutional Review Implementation Committee to synthesize the Government’s position paper and the Constitutional Review Commission’s reports. This committee will categorize proposals into non-entrenched clauses, requiring only Parliamentary approval, and entrenched clauses, which necessitate a referendum. For entrenched clauses, at least 40 percent of registered voters must participate, with 75 percent of those voting in favor. Additionally, President Mahama addressed requests from the Paramount Chief of Kologo Traditional Area, Naba Clifford Abagna Tandegrewongrekugre Asobayire V, directing the Minister of Roads and Highways to construct a road and the Minister of Education to establish a Senior High School in the area.
