NIMASA introduces new standards for seafarers' training and certification

This initiative aims to enhance Nigeria's adherence to international maritime regulations and foster globally competitive seafarers. Osagie Edward, Deputy Director and Head of Public Relations, stated that this new regulatory framework, detailed in a Marine Notice, aligns with the Merchant Shipping Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Regulations, 2025. The framework revises requirements in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended.

Effective October 2025, prospective officers seeking operational and management level Certificates of Competency will need to complete approved academic programs at NIMASA-approved Maritime Education and Training Institutions and acquire qualifying sea service before taking the Certificate of Competency examinations. NIMASA has also introduced mandatory Bridging Courses for National Diploma or Higher National Diploma holders in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering issued on or before July 3, 2026, to help them transition to the new standards by December 2028. A compulsory 15-week Ratings Education and Training Programme has been introduced for all ratings
