Nigeria's petrol imports rise in July as domestic refinery supply drops 21%

Total Premium Motor Spirit petrol receipts fell by 10% from 50.6 million litres per day in June to 45.5 million litres per day in July. Domestic refineries supplied 25.8 million litres daily in July, down from 32.5 million litres daily in June, while imported petrol receipts increased from 18.1 million litres daily to 19.7 million litres daily. This trend, which began in June, highlights the vulnerability of Nigeria's supply system when local refinery output or crude intake declines.

Crude oil receipts by domestic refineries also declined by 8% from 632,000 barrels per day in June to 585,000 barrels per day in July. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery operated at over 71% capacity, producing approximately 25.9 million litres of petrol per day, closely matching the total domestic PMS receipts in July. In the diesel market, Automotive Gas Oil receipts rose by 46% to 23.6 million litres per day in July, with imports accounting for 7.9 million litres daily after no imports were recorded in June.

Petrol consumption in Nigeria dropped by 25% to 35.7 million litres per day in July, while petrol stock sufficiency improved from 19.7 days to 22.4 days. Domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas supply increased by 22%, and imports declined by 40%, with LPG consumption rising by 7%.
