Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner to acquire Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and investor Joshua Kushner are reportedly set to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal valued at $12.5 billion, according to ESPN. This sale would establish a new record for a sports franchise acquisition, surpassing the $10 billion deal for a controlling interest in the team made by billionaire Mark Walter approximately a year ago. Joshua Kushner is the brother of Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump鈥檚 son-in-law. Walter's purchase, reported in June of last year, concluded the Buss family's 46-year ownership of the team. The Lakers have secured 17 NBA championships, placing them second only to the Boston Celtics. The team has featured prominent players such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O鈥橬eal, and the late Kobe Bryant. LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, recently departed the Lakers for the Philadelphia 76ers after an eight-year tenure that included one championship. The acquisition is subject to approval from the NBA鈥檚 board of governors, a process that ESPN indicates could take several weeks.
