Nigeria's interest rate dilemma: balancing investor appeal and business growth

The Central Bank of Nigeria has maintained its Monetary Policy Rate at 26.5 percent, aiming to control inflation and stabilize the naira. While high interest rates attract foreign portfolio investors, who accounted for nearly all of Nigeria’s $10.37 billion capital inflows in the first quarter of 2026, they also constrain local manufacturers facing borrowing costs between 25 percent and 35 percent. Analysts suggest the challenge is to lower borrowing costs without triggering inflation, naira depreciation, or capital flight.

Muda Yusuf, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, and Wale Olusi, Director of Deals Advisory at PwC, emphasize the need for the government and the CBN to balance these factors, with Olusi stating the CBN's primary role is macroeconomic stability. Professor of International Economics, Jonathan Aremu, however, questions the focus on portfolio investors, advocating instead for policies that attract Foreign Direct Investment and enterprise investors who establish factories, rather than "hot money" that can destabilize the economy.
