Auctioneers demand probe of MDAs' asset disposal process
The Nigeria Auctioneers Association has accused government ministries, departments, and agencies MDAs of illegally taking over the roles of licensed auctioneers in disposing of seized and public assets. The association alleges that this practice, particularly by the Nigeria Customs Service, violates due process and leads to a loss of substantial government revenue. Musa Kurra, National President of the association, stated that MDAs are creating internal structures to value and dispose of assets instead of engaging licensed professionals as required by law. He cited the Customs Direct Auction Administration Department as an illegal entity and alleged cases where valuable assets, including 338 vehicles, were sold for significantly undervalued amounts, such as N10,000 per vehicle. Kurra called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate these claims, emphasizing that asset disposal should be transparent and conducted by licensed professionals to ensure accountability and fair value for public property. In response, Abdullahi Maiwada, spokesperson for the Nigeria Customs Service, clarified that different procedures apply to fixed assets purchased through budgetary allocations and items seized for violating Customs laws. He stated that while fixed assets require auctioneers, seized goods can be disposed of through direct allocation or online auction without their involvement.
