Aliko Dangote to donate one-third of his wealth to charity, daughter reveals
Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, plans to donate one-third of his wealth to charity as part of his succession plan, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote. Halima, a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, stated in a Bloomberg interview that her father has secured his family's support to dedicate 33 percent of his estate to philanthropy. With Dangote's net worth estimated at $35.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, this commitment would amount to approximately $11.7 billion. Halima explained that philanthropy is central to her father's legacy and is embedded in the family's long-term succession plans, aligning with the Sharia Code in Islam. The Aliko Dangote Foundation, established in 1994, was endowed with $1.25 billion about a decade ago and has since received an additional $700 million. Approximately 70 percent of the foundation's spending is directed to Nigeria, 20 percent to projects across Africa, and the remainder to initiatives in other parts of the world. The foundation's work covers health, education, nutrition, and humanitarian relief, including partnerships that contributed to the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa. This planned commitment, while less than the 50 percent of the Giving Pledge, would be among the largest philanthropic pledges by an African billionaire. Dangote was recently named among the world's most influential philanthropists by TIME magazine.
