
Yobe State University to implement mandatory tree planting for student graduation
Yobe State University plans to make tree planting and environmental stewardship a graduation requirement for all students. Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Bashir Tahir announced this during the flag-off of the 2026 Tree Planting Initiative. Under the proposed policy, each student will be expected to plant and nurture at least one tree from admission until graduation, potentially requiring evidence before certificate clearance. Professor Tahir emphasized the importance of trees for preventing erosion and flooding, providing shade and fruits, and serving as natural laboratories for various disciplines. He commended the initiative, which was organized by the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, Faculty of Agriculture, under the theme โGreening Our Faculty for a Sustainable Future.โ The Vice-Chancellor directed the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management to collaborate with the Directorate of Works and Physical Planning to organize annual tree-planting competitions and promised university awards for top-performing faculties and departments. The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture acknowledged student initiators Mohammed Mallam Mohammed and Hauwa Ahmed Damagum, both 300-level students, and thanked Dr. Mulima Idi Mato of the North East Arid Zone Development Programme for donating nursery equipment and planting materials, and Ahmad Abba Disa of Green City Garden for support.
