Nigerian Bar Association warns against violence, urges police neutrality in Osun governorship election
Afam Osigwe, the outgoing President of the Nigerian Bar Association, has expressed concern over increasing political violence and killings in Osun State ahead of Saturday鈥檚 governorship election. Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, Osigwe noted that 73 election violence-related incidents have been reported, with a death toll of approximately 29 between May and July. He highlighted that the violence appears orchestrated and coordinated, with Osogbo and Ilesa identified as flashpoints, accounting for over 50 percent of reported cases. Osigwe urged politicians to control their supporters and appealed to security personnel deployed for the election, including police, civil defense, and correctional officers, to remain neutral and perform their duties without aiding any political party. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of electoral officials, voters, and all participants to produce an outcome that inspires confidence in the electoral process.
