Nigerian education stakeholders advocate for adaptive learners and cultural integration in schools
Education stakeholders in Nigeria are urging schools to cultivate adaptive learners who can think critically, innovate solutions, and respond to a changing world. During a panel discussion at the 2026 Total School Support Seminar/Exhibition in Oregun, Lagos, Adetola Salau, Special Adviser to the Minister of Education on STEM, emphasized shifting from rote memorization to applying knowledge to solve real-world problems in areas like education, transportation, culture, and climate change. Educationist Susan Babatunde, Chief Business Officer of Blooming Greens School, highlighted the importance of preparing children as global citizens while maintaining cultural identity, suggesting the incorporation of Nigerian folklore, history, and music into the curriculum. She noted her school's partnership with the Confucius Institute to teach Mandarin, alongside a blended British and Nigerian curriculum that uses cultural events and art exhibitions. Wunmi Ogunde, Convener of the Total School Support Seminar/Exhibition, also called for developing adaptive minds, not conformists, encouraging learners to tackle issues such as sanitation and sustainability. Ogunde stressed building confidence and a strong connection to Nigeria and Africa for children, regardless of where they study, and announced the launch of Edtechboard 360, an education intelligence platform.
