World number one Jannik Sinner withdraws from US Open due to knee injury
World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner announced on Friday that he will not participate in the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, because of a right knee injury. The Italian stated that despite working hard with his team and medical staff, they made the difficult decision as he still needs more time to recover from the issue. Sinner, a five-time Grand Slam winner, has not played since winning Wimbledon on July 12 and had previously withdrawn from US Open warm-up tournaments in Cincinnati and Montreal. The 24-year-old expressed his sadness and disappointment, noting that New York holds a special place in his heart, having won the US Open in 2024 and reaching the final last year. He will remain in Europe to continue his recovery, aiming to be ready for the Asian swing and tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai. Sinner had a dominant 2026 season with 44 wins against three losses and six titles, including Wimbledon, but faced a disappointment at the French Open where he exited in the second round due to a heatwave. His rival, Carlos Alcaraz, is set to return to competition at the US Open after a four-month absence due to a wrist injury.
