Nigeria records over 65,000 suspected cholera cases and 10,000 confirmed diphtheria cases this year

While weekly cholera cases and the proportion of reported cases resulting in death have declined from earlier peaks, Dr. Idris emphasized that the outbreak is not over. Additionally, the country has recorded over 10,000 confirmed diphtheria cases this year, with a considerable reduction in the proportion of confirmed cases leading to death compared to the previous year. States like Kano, Borno, and Bauchi bear a significant burden of diphtheria, with low vaccination coverage identified as a key factor in its spread.

The NCDC and other government agencies are implementing interventions for both outbreaks, including surveillance, laboratory capacity strengthening, case management support, and community engagement. For cholera, efforts focus on early treatment access and improving water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions. For diphtheria, the response centers on enhancing vaccination coverage, rapid case identification, and appropriate treatment.

Dr. Idris stressed that federal action alone is insufficient, urging state and local governments, health facilities, and communities to intensify their efforts, particularly in high-risk areas, by addressing critical gaps and allocating resources effectively.
