Nigeria begins Women's Africa Cup of Nations title defense against Malawi

Coach Justin Madugu emphasized that the Super Falcons' ultimate goal is to win every game. Nigeria enters the tournament in strong form, having won eight of their last nine matches, including a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their final preparation match. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Esther Okoronkwo scored in that game.

The Super Falcons are aiming for a record-extending 11th continental title, having secured their previous title by defeating Morocco 3-2. In contrast, Malawi, making their first appearance, has faced challenges, with five defeats in their last six matches, including a 4-0 loss to Ghana. They have also struggled with scoring, failing to net in four of their last six games, though they did draw with Zambia and beat Angola in qualifiers.

Nigeria is expected to be without defender Ashleigh Plumptre due to injury, but their squad remains strong with Ajibade and Okoronkwo leading the attack. Malawi may rely on the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa. The Falcons' preparations were briefly overshadowed by an incident where forward Esther Okoronkwo alleged $700 was stolen from her at the team's hotel, leading to racist messages on her social media.

Okoronkwo condemned the abuse and affirmed the team's focus on the tournament. After facing Malawi, Nigeria will play Zambia and Egypt in Group C.
