Namibia reaffirms commitment to Cuba despite international pressure and economic embargo
Namibia's Prime Minister, Elijah Ngurare, stated that Namibia will not yield to international pressure to distance itself from Cuba. Speaking in Havana during a colloquium commemorating Fidel Castro's centenary, Ngurare reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to its long-standing ally, despite the economic embargo on Cuba. He emphasized Namibia's moral obligation to support Cuba, citing the country's crucial role in Namibia's liberation struggle, including the involvement of Cuban internationalist combatants in Operation Carlota and the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, which contributed to Namibia's independence in 1990. Ngurare also called on the United Nations to compel the United States to lift its economic embargo on Cuba, describing the sanctions as an inhuman humanitarian crisis that has led to shortages of electricity, medicines, and the suspension of surgeries. He confirmed that Namibia, under President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, will continue its support for Cuba.
