Meru journalists protest alleged assault of K24 reporter at county offices, demand justice
Journalists in Meru have protested, demanding justice for K24 and Kameme TV reporter Nelson Mutwiri, who was allegedly assaulted while covering an incident at county revenue offices. Meru Press Club chairperson David Muchui called for accountability and administrative action, emphasizing the need to protect journalists. Mutwiri stated that he was pushed out of the offices while recording events, leading to damage to his camera and lens. The CECM accused of the assault, Nturibi Etirikia, denied the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and linking them to his support for Governor M鈥橢thingia. Etirikia claimed some reporters were influenced by the governor's opponents. Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo condemned physical attacks against journalists, stressing that disagreements should not escalate to violence and that accountability is crucial to end impunity. Journalists maintained that an assault on one reporter is an assault on all, highlighting concerns over press freedom and access to public offices.
