National Education: Special recruitment of 2,527 teachers sparks controversy

This initiative, however, has raised concerns among education stakeholders, who fear it may compromise the quality and competence of teaching staff. The ministry states that this special recruitment addresses an urgent structural need, unlike competitive recruitment which requires lengthy prior training. Candidates are expected to undergo an immersion training program at Regional Education Personnel Training Centers before deployment.

However, unions, including the General Union of Teachers of Senegal SGES, argue that urgency should not justify a process that could undermine teaching quality. They emphasize that merely filling quantitative gaps is insufficient; ensuring the quality of recruits is paramount. A union official noted that many teachers from a previous recruitment of 2,000 had no professional experience.

Unions are calling for greater transparency in the selection process, clearly defined criteria, and adapted pedagogical support, especially for teachers in challenging environments. They also stress the importance of professionalizing the teaching profession, advocating for recruitment to be part of a sustainable training and professionalization policy, rather than short-term training.
