National Assembly reaffirms commitment to support Nigerian Armed Forces against terrorism and banditry

Mr Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, stated the National Assembly's ongoing commitment to supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces in their fight against terrorism and banditry. Speaking in Abuja, Agbese affirmed that the 10th National Assembly would provide legislative backing, funding, and oversight to strengthen the military and other security agencies. His remarks followed a recent attack by terrorists on Nigerian Army troops in Benisheikh, Borno State, which resulted in the death of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and several soldiers. Agbese acknowledged the evolving security threats, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and kidnapping. He emphasized the legislature's dedication to prioritizing defence and security through adequate budgetary provisions, improved personnel welfare, and enhanced intelligence gathering. Lawmakers are also committed to strengthening oversight of defence spending to ensure transparency and effective resource utilization, with Agbese stressing the importance of sustained and timely funding for critical defence assets. He urged Nigerians to support the armed forces by providing credible information, highlighting that the battle against terrorism and banditry requires cooperation from all citizens. Agbese expressed optimism that collaboration among the legislature, executive, and security agencies would help overcome current security challenges and restore peace.
