Gombe State pensioners struggle with low monthly payments amid rising cost of living
Robert Shige, Deputy Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Gombe State Council, highlighted the challenges faced by retirees in the state, particularly concerning the inadequacy of their monthly pensions. While payments are regular, some pensioners receive as little as N9,000 per month, an amount deemed insufficient to cover basic needs given the current economic climate. Shige, a 73-year-old former civil servant who retired in 2013, noted that the cost of living has significantly increased since his time in service. Pensioners are forced to supplement their income through farming, trading, or relying on financially capable children, though not all have this support. The rising costs of food, transportation, and healthcare severely impact their well-being, with some unable to afford medical treatment. The Union has appealed to the government for an increase, suggesting a minimum pension of N50,000 to provide some relief, acknowledging that workers' salaries have increased while pensioners face the same economic pressures. While Governor Inuwa Yahaya has made progress in settling gratuity arrears, the Union continues to advocate for an upward review of monthly pensions.
