Namibia's road safety crisis attributed to systemic failures, not just driver behavior

The standing committee on transport, infrastructure and housing reached this conclusion after nationwide consultations and public hearings. Committee chairperson George !Garab highlighted that the recurrence of issues across regions points to systemic weaknesses in the road safety system. The committee asserts that road deaths require more than just awareness campaigns, advocating for a national road safety strategy with measurable targets, clear accountability, stronger enforcement, safer roads, improved emergency response, and continuous public education.

From January 1 to August 19, the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund recorded 1,905 crashes, resulting in 3,592 casualties and 304 deaths. The Khomas region had the highest number of crashes, while Erongo and Otjozondjupa regions recorded the most fatalities. The report indicates that while driver behavior is a leading factor, issues like speeding, reckless driving, alcohol, fatigue, and unsafe overtaking are compounded by poor infrastructure, vehicle conditions, and weak enforcement.
