Zambian President Hichilema thanks citizens after election victory, pledges focus on development
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed gratitude to Zambians for renewing his mandate, highlighting the election as a demonstration of the nation's commitment to peace, law, order, and democracy. Hichilema, who secured 2,965,326 votes against Brian Mundubile's 1,856,218 in the August 13 election, stated that the country must now prioritize development. He emphasized the need to work harder to deliver meaningful development across Zambia and acknowledged voters who supported opposition parties, assuring them that his government would continue to work for all citizens. The United Party for National Development UPND media director, Mark Simuuwe, noted that Hichilema's victory is a significant milestone for the party, following unsuccessful presidential bids in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015, and 2016 before his 2021 win. The UPND also achieved its highest-ever parliamentary representation. The party's current priorities include job creation, especially for youth and women, improving livelihoods, and strengthening national unity.
