Namibia records over 18,500 gender-based violence cases in 2025/26 financial year

These figures were disclosed at the third Namibia National Women’s Conference in Swakopmund, where Zambezi police commander commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo addressed delegates. She highlighted that incidents of GBV, domestic violence, sexual offenses, and emotional abuse against women and children remain a significant concern for the police. Commissioner Sakuwa-Neo emphasized that law enforcement's role extends beyond investigations to protecting vulnerable individuals, providing victim-centered services, and collaborating with communities to prevent violence.

She noted that while policing is crucial, sustainable solutions require collective responsibility and urged communities to report suspected cases of abuse. The commissioner also called for parents to raise children who value respect and equality, teaching boys that strength is demonstrated through responsibility and respect for women. The conference, organized by the Progressive Men Empowerment Organisation of Namibia, focused on empowering women with knowledge and strategies to reduce their vulnerability to GBV.

Fillemon Amoolongo, the conference's founder and president, advised women to consider a partner's upbringing, values, respect, and responsibility beyond financial stability and physical appearance to prioritize their safety.
