Drought becomes a lasting climate feature, expert says
Dalila Loudyi, a professor at Hassan II University of Casablanca and a specialist in climate change and natural disaster management, states that drought is becoming a structural phenomenon in Morocco, moving beyond mere cyclical dry spells. She highlights that while Morocco has historically experienced droughts, the current situation is characterized by increased frequency, duration, and intensity of dry periods, with seven consecutive agricultural campaigns between 2018 and 2025 experiencing rainfall deficits. This is attributed to a combination of natural climate variability and human-induced climate change, which has led to a 15-25% decrease in precipitation since the 1980s and a 1.5掳C rise in average temperature. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC identifies the Mediterranean basin as a climate change hotspot, projecting further temperature increases of 2-3掳C and precipitation decreases of 10-30% by 2050 if global greenhouse gas emissions are not significantly reduced. Loudyi emphasizes that rising temperatures exacerbate drought conditions independently of rainfall deficits, accelerating evapotranspiration and increasing water loss from soils, water bodies, and dams. This leads to faster soil drying, increased irrigation needs, and greater evaporation from reservoirs.
