New York University researchers develop blood test for early Alzheimer's detection
A research team led by Professors Allal Boutajangout and Thomas Wisniewski at New York University has made a significant breakthrough in Alzheimer's disease detection. They have demonstrated that a simple blood test can identify the early signs of the disease years before the onset of clinically apparent dementia. Dr. Boutajangout, a professor of neurology and neuroscience at NYU's School of Medicine and co-director of the Cognitive Neurology Center and Biomarker Platform, explained that this approach analyzes plasma biomarkers, including beta-amyloid and tau proteins, as well as several pro-inflammatory and inflammatory biomarkers. The study's findings showed a strong correlation between these blood biomarkers and cerebral amyloid and tau protein deposits observed via PET scans, as well as other biomarkers. The results also accurately identified different stages of the disease's progression. Dr. Boutajangout highlighted that these biomarkers can reveal the initial pathological processes of Alzheimer's eight to ten years before major clinical signs appear, a period when brain lesions are developing but are often undetectable by conventional diagnostic methods.
