UK reinstates BATUK military exercise in Kenya after licensing agreement
The United Kingdom has confirmed the reinstatement of Exercise HARAKA STORM, a military training exercise in Kenya, after the Kenyan government agreed to issue the necessary licenses and permissions. The exercise, which had been previously relocated due to a licensing dispute, will now proceed in Kenya later this year as originally planned. A UK government spokesperson stated on Tuesday, July 28, that the close cooperation between the UK and Kenya enabled this progress. The UK Ministry of Defence had earlier moved the exercise to an alternative site outside Kenya because formal authorizations for training in Laikipia County were not issued in time. The relocation had disappointed communities and businesses in Laikipia that rely on the economic activity generated by such exercises. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that detailed planning by the British Army ensures the training can still be delivered within the original timeframe. The UK government reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong defense ties with Kenya, emphasizing that the longstanding military partnership benefits both countries and advances shared security interests and strategic objectives.
