NEFF calls for stricter mining regulation and scrutiny of foreign workers in Kunene region
The Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters NEFF has urged tighter controls on mining activities and foreign workers in the Kunene region. NEFF deputy leader Kalimbo Iipumbu stated that some companies are allegedly operating illegally, marginalizing small-scale miners. During a visit by the parliamentary standing committee on natural resources, Iipumbu highlighted the region's mineral wealth, including copper, suggesting it could alleviate poverty and hunger if properly regulated and developed for local communities. He called on the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy to enhance mineral extraction and processing mechanisms, ensuring economic benefits for communities. Iipumbu also advocated for transparent pricing and fair compensation for local miners' produce. Furthermore, he requested immigration authorities to inspect foreign nationals in the mining sector, verifying work permits and documents, as some may be working with expired, fraudulently obtained, or forged permits. Iipumbu warned that Namibia cannot combat poverty, hunger, and malnutrition while its mineral resources are underdeveloped or poorly regulated.
