Meta plans new restrictions for Instagram and Facebook users under 18

This measure still requires approval from a federal judge in California. If approved, the new regulations would take effect within six months in the affected states. Restrictions could only be lifted or eased with parental consent.

Key measures include limiting combined daily use of Instagram and Facebook to two hours. Platform access, excluding messaging services, would also be blocked between midnight and 6 AM. Meta also plans to mute notifications between 10 PM and 7 AM, as well as during school hours.

"Like" counts would be hidden to reduce social pressure related to online popularity. Another proposed measure is the deactivation of filters that simulate cosmetic surgery, which are often criticized for their influence on teenagers' body image. These new restrictions reflect a commitment to enhancing the protection of minors from the potentially harmful effects of intensive social media use.
