Ghana police foil bank robbery, kill two suspects, arrest one
The Ghana Police Service thwarted an attempt to rob three banks in Labone, Accra, on August 13, 2026. Acting on intelligence received at 10:45 AM, a police team was deployed to the area where a robbery syndicate was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. Upon the arrival of the police, one vehicle attempted to flee, leading to a chase and the arrest of suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The occupants of a second vehicle engaged in a shootout with the police while trying to escape, resulting in the deaths of two suspects. Authorities recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson, along with a blow pistol. Augustine Okechuku Maazi is currently in custody, assisting with the investigation, while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been moved to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy. The police urged the public to continue providing credible information on criminal activities.
