Rodrigues lime obtains Protected Geographical Indication label after 12-year wait
The Rodrigues lime has officially received its Protected Geographical Indication PGI label, marking a significant achievement after 12 years of effort. This recognition provides an economic, agricultural, and cultural identity for the island, extending beyond a simple label. Louis Ange Perrine, Commissioner for Agriculture, expressed satisfaction, highlighting that the PGI opens new opportunities for producers, processors, and entrepreneurs involved with this citrus fruit. A PGI identifies a product whose quality, reputation, or specific characteristics are linked to a defined geographical origin, requiring at least one stage of its production, processing, or preparation to occur within that area. This label aims to protect the product's identity, origin, and reputation, allowing Rodrigues to market not just a fruit, but its origin, history, expertise, and reputation. It also helps combat imitations and misuse of the protected name, granting producers collective rights over the product's reputation. The Rodrigues lime has become integral to the island's identity, cultivated in gardens and family farms, generating income and valuing agricultural land.
