Senegal increases fuel prices, former Prime Minister Sonko's warning realized
The Senegalese government announced an adjustment to fuel prices, effective today, August 15, 2026. Super unleaded is now 990 F CFA per liter, an increase of 70 F CFA, and diesel is 755 F CFA per liter, up by 75 F CFA. This decision follows a warning made by former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in May, who stated that a price increase might become unavoidable due to the Middle East crisis. The government explained that this adjustment returns prices to their levels before a reduction implemented on December 6, 2025. Prices for other petroleum products, including gas and fuel for canoes, remain unchanged. The increase is attributed to the global rise in oil prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East. While moderate, this hike is expected to impact the Senegalese economy, affecting transport costs and consumer goods prices, requiring citizens to adapt to persistent high living costs.
