Algeria surpasses US as top ammonia supplier to Norway, eyes broader European market leadership
Algeria has emerged as the leading supplier of ammonia to Norway in July, exporting 25,000 tons, which accounts for nearly half of Norway's total ammonia imports for the month. This positions Algeria ahead of the United States, which supplied 23,000 tons. This performance highlights Algeria's growing presence in the European ammonia market, where it currently holds approximately 30% market share, having shipped around 800,000 tons to Europe in the first half of the year. The increase in Algerian exports comes as the European market prepares for stricter environmental regulations, including the European Union's carbon border adjustment mechanism. To maintain its competitive edge and market share, Algeria is focusing on adapting its ammonia production to these new environmental requirements. The national oil and gas company Sonatrach is actively working on reducing emissions in gas upstream operations, developing green hydrogen, and establishing new capacities for green ammonia production. A pilot project for green ammonia with German company VNG is expected to begin production in 2027. Algeria is also investing in renewable energy infrastructure, with plans to integrate 3,000 MW of solar energy and launch 1,000 MW of wind energy this year, alongside identifying sites for large-scale green hydrogen production units. The country's geographical proximity to Europe is seen as an advantage for future trade, particularly as transport costs and carbon footprint become more significan
