Macky Sall among candidates in second UN Secretary-General consultative vote
The process to designate the next United Nations Secretary-General continued on Friday, August 21, with the Security Council holding a second consultative vote to evaluate candidates, including former Senegalese President Macky Sall. This round saw an increase in "no opinion" ballots, rising from approximately 21% in the first vote to nearly 34% in the second, indicating an undecided election and reservations among several Council members. In the initial consultative vote on July 30, Rebeca Grynspan led with ten favorable opinions, followed by Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with nine, and Rafael Grossi with seven. Macky Sall and Michelle Bachelet each received six favorable opinions. While the second round aims to assess shifts in power dynamics, detailed results for individual candidates are not yet reliably available, making it premature to conclude on Macky Sall's current standing. The detailed results are highly anticipated as the race to succeed António Guterres enters a more decisive phase.
