Zambezi farmers await payment for cattle from Zamco
Livestock farmers in the Zambezi region accuse Zambezi Meat Corporation Zamco of failing to pay for 770 head of cattle collected since June. Albertus Kulobone, a representative for Zambezi Progressive Farmers, stated that Zamco had promised payment within four to seven days. Farmers are concerned about the whereabouts of their livestock and the lack of communication from Zamco. This situation follows the closure of the Katima Mulilo abattoir, which Meatco previously operated before handing over to Zamco in June. Farmers claim they were not properly consulted about this change, which has impacted their ability to meet household expenses, including school fees. Zambezi Progressive Farmers held a demonstration and petitioned Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare for intervention. They also raised concerns with the agriculture ministry and the National Assembly speaker. In response, Zamco denies these claims, stating it opened the abattoir on July 1 and has paid most producers for over 300 head of cattle, with fewer than 50 remaining to be paid this week. Zamco suggests farmers should have verified payment status at their offices.
