Libya's GECOL announces operation of first unit at new South Tripoli power station

This development is part of efforts to complete and equip the generating units at the station. While GECOL did not specify when the new power would reach the public, Libyan media suggests it could be within days. This follows assurances from the newly installed GECOL Chairman, Bashir Al-Marash, on August 26, that Libya's electricity crisis would end within two weeks.

The South Tripoli station has a total production capacity of approximately 1,300 megawatts, and both GECOL and the Tripoli-based Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba government are relying on it to resolve the country's electricity issues. However, some analysts in Libyan media question if the station's output will be sufficient to meet Libya's rising annual power consumption. Libya has experienced an acute electricity crisis since mid-June, characterized by frequent power cuts and blackouts, leading to violent demonstrations, road blockades, and the barricading of state buildings.

These power cuts have also caused telecommunications interruptions, increased demand and prices for diesel, bread shortages, industrial production losses, and clinic closures, at times threatening the Aldabaiba government, which responded by appointing a new GECOL Chairman.
