SADC Executive Secretary urges Southern Africa to invest in resilience amid global instability
SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi called for unity and resolve in Southern Africa to address global instability, emphasizing the need for deeper trust, stronger cooperation, and decisive investment in resilience. Speaking at the Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers in Durban, Magosi highlighted progress in energy generation, digital connectivity, and agricultural recovery, noting over 4,800 megawatts of new generation capacity, 57.2% internet penetration, and 95% mobile penetration. Agricultural growth rebounded to 2-3%, and food insecurity decreased by 16%. However, he cautioned that climate shocks, aging infrastructure, and underfunded innovation threaten regional integration. Magosi stressed a shift from reactive disaster responses to proactive resilience, advocating for strengthened early warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, and anticipatory planning, especially in light of a forecasted severe El Ni帽o event. He also underscored the importance of youth-driven agribusiness and innovation, urging governments to integrate youth priorities into agricultural investment plans. Magosi reaffirmed SADC鈥檚 commitment to peace and democracy, welcoming Zambia鈥檚 upcoming general elections. He concluded by stating that regional integration aims to create opportunities, strengthen connections, and improve citizens' quality of life.
