Kenya to import 25 million bags of maize to address projected food shortage

Kenya consumes approximately 75 million bags annually, but climate-related crop failures are expected to create a significant production gap. Kagwe made the announcement during a joint NAVCDP and FSRP meeting in Mombasa on August 18, 2026. He stated that arrangements for the imports have been made and assured Kenyans that the country would not face hunger.

The government will also work with the National Treasury to reduce taxes and bureaucratic barriers to boost agricultural investment. Long-term solutions include irrigation infrastructure, such as the Galana Kulalu scheme, to reduce drought-induced food insecurity. Council of Governors Agriculture Committee chair Ken Lusaka urged young Kenyans to engage in agriculture, smart farming, value addition, and agribusiness.

Both national and county governments are focused on building resilient food systems through stronger agricultural value chains, digital extension services, and youth-led agribusiness ventures.
