KRA to freeze bank accounts, seize assets of housing levy defaulters; Homa Bay rally disrupted
The Kenya Revenue Authority KRA is preparing to launch a crackdown on housing levy defaulters, which could lead to bank account freezes, asset seizures, and PIN deactivation for workers, traders, and employers. This enforcement follows changes to the law that took effect on July 1, granting KRA the legal powers to collect unpaid levies. Previously, KRA collected the 1.5% levy on gross pay or income since July 2024 but lacked the authority to pursue defaulters. Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga stated that the government expects stronger enforcement from KRA, as the authority had insisted on explicit legal powers to recover unremitted or unpaid amounts. In other news, a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay county, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other opposition leaders, was marked by political tension and disruptions on August 16. The event, which included Siaya governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, faced road blockades and burning tires. Suba South MP Caroli Omondi alleged pressure to abandon the campaign but affirmed their commitment to continue. Suspected individuals reportedly attacked leaders and journalists covering the rally.
