Kano State Governor inaugurates sickle cell center and disease control complex

The Sickle Cell Centre aims to provide free diagnosis, counseling, treatment, and follow-up care for individuals with sickle cell disease. The new office complex for the Centre for Disease Control is intended to enhance the state's capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to epidemic-prone diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and meningitis. Governor Yusuf also initiated the distribution of 300 customized digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees, citing concerns about hypertension-related sudden deaths.

Additionally, he oversaw the symbolic distribution of free maternal and Accident and Emergency commodities, along with new hospital bed sheets, at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, noted significant investments in the health sector, including a reported decrease in maternal mortality from over 1,300 cases in 2023 to about 300 in 2026. The Executive Secretary of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mansur Nagoda, praised the governor's initiatives as a major boost to healthcare in Kano.
