Peter Cullen, voice of Optimus Prime, dies at 85
Peter Cullen, the renowned voice actor for Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, passed away on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 85. His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed his death to the Los Angeles Times. The cause of death was not disclosed, but his family stated he "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family." Cullen's career spanned television, films, video games, and theme park rides, accumulating over 200 credits. While best known for Optimus Prime, a role he originated in the 1980s animated series and reprised in numerous films including Michael Bay's live-action adaptations and recent prequels, he also voiced other notable characters. These included the giant ape in the 1976 King Kong remake, KARR in Knight Rider, the alien hunter in the original Predator film, and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh productions. Cullen was born on July 28, 1941, in Montreal and graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children's and Family Emmy Awards in 2023. He is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.
