International operation targets West African cybercrime networks, resulting in 58 arrests across 22 countries

The operation focused on romance and investment scams, and investigated how these groups laundered money and conducted financial fraud cybercrimes, including cryptocurrency and email compromise fraud. Interpol noted that scams often targeted retirees in English-speaking countries and highlighted the use of sextortion against minors, with victims as young as 14. Preliminary outcomes included arrests in Argentina, Italy, Romania, and South Africa.

In South Africa, 39 arrests were made, $2.67 million was seized, and 257 bank accounts were blocked following raids on seven sites. Tomonobu Kaya, director of Interpol's financial crime centre, emphasized the power of international cooperation in disrupting illicit financial flows. These West African networks, including groups like the Nigerian Black Axe, are also involved in other serious and violent crimes.

Operation Jackal IV is part of a series of operations, with Jackal III in 2024 leading to 300 arrests.
