Tadej Pogacar favored to win Vuelta a Espana, aiming for Grand Tour treble
Five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar is the top favorite to win the Vuelta a Espana, which begins on Saturday in Monaco. The Slovenian cyclist, who secured his fifth Tour de France title in July and won the Giro d鈥橧talia in 2024, is seeking to complete the Grand Tour treble by adding the Vuelta to his achievements. A victory would also make him only the fourth rider to achieve a Tour-Vuelta double in the same season. Pogacar has not competed in the Spanish Grand Tour since his debut in 2019, where he finished third overall. Vuelta director Javier Guillen stated that Pogacar is coming to win. While defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is injured, Pogacar will face strong competition, including his compatriot Primoz Roglic, a four-time Vuelta winner aiming for a record fifth title. Other contenders include Enric Mas, Richard Carapaz, Oscar Onley, Felix Gall, and Pogacar's teammate Joao Almeida. The race features a challenging route with six high-mountain stages, seven summit finishes, and approximately 58,000 meters of climbing, concluding in Granada on September 13.
