Yamoussoukro to host Special Olympics National Games with over 300 athletes
Yamoussoukro, the political capital of C么te d'Ivoire, will host the Special Olympics National Games from August 20 to 22, 2026. The event, themed "Sport, Disability and Social Inclusion," was announced at a press conference in Abidjan-Cocody on July 28, 2026. Over 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities are expected to compete in twelve disciplines, including athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, football, golf, weightlifting, swimming, table tennis, floorball, and handball. 脡ric Monnet, Executive Director of Special Olympics C么te d鈥橧voire, stated that the competition aims to select about 100 athletes for the World Games in Santiago 2027. Yamoussoukro was chosen to highlight the political capital and accommodate athletes who may not be accustomed to travel. Monnet emphasized that intellectual disability does not preclude athletic excellence. The initiative seeks to promote social inclusion and remove barriers for individuals with intellectual disabilities through inclusive programs in sport, health, leadership, early childhood development, and education. A partnership agreement was signed between the SIFCA Foundation and Special Olympics C么te d鈥橧voire to support the organization of the National Games, with the SIFCA Foundation having been a consistent partner since 2015.
