Ghanaian woman, 68, released after wrongful drug conviction, expresses despair
Ama Forson, a 68-year-old woman from Nyanyano, was released from Nsawam Medium Security Prison after serving four years of a 15-year sentence for an alleged drug-related offense. She maintains her innocence, stating she was wrongly convicted of selling cannabis. Forson recounted that she sold food and alcohol and was given an incomplete building by a landlord for shelter, who also used the building to smoke. She was arrested after police, claiming she sold cannabis, handcuffed her and took her to ACC Police Station, then Kasoa Police Station. She claims items suspected to be cannabis were attributed to her despite her denials. Forson spent over two years in police cells before her sentencing and claims she had to pay for police officers' fuel to transport her to court. Following an appeal, she was released, but the experience, including the death of her only son, has left her feeling hopeless and contemplating suicide due to the hardship, disgrace, and emotional trauma.
