Professor Appiagyei-Atua questions Supreme Court petitions on presidential term limits
Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, a Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the University of Ghana, stated that two petitions filed at the Supreme Court regarding Ghana鈥檚 presidential term limits are unnecessary. He argues that the constitutional provision on presidential terms is clear and does not require further interpretation. According to Professor Appiagyei-Atua, serving two terms, whether consecutive or non-consecutive, exhausts a person's eligibility to serve as President. He emphasized that if the law is unambiguous, the Supreme Court does not need to interpret it. Two individuals, Ganiwu Alhassan and Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, have filed separate suits seeking interpretation of these term limits. Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has publicly stated he will not seek a third term, confirming his current mandate is limited to one final term under the constitution.
