Former Anamo director general Maodo Malick Mbaye released after year-long detention
Maodo Malick Mbaye, former director general of the National Agency of the Tool House Anamo, has been released after a year of detention in a high-profile financial case in Senegal. The case originated from a complaint filed by Omar Ndiaye, Mbaye's successor at Anamo, alleging embezzlement of public funds. The investigation by the Financial Judicial Pool led to Mbaye's indictment on July 22, 2025. He faced charges including embezzlement of over 619 million CFA francs, fraud, criminal association, forgery, use of forged administrative or commercial documents, and money laundering. Mbaye, who was living in Morocco, publicly denied the accusations, stating he had committed no criminal acts and had not fled the country. His offers of bail, including an agricultural complex and two properties, were rejected, leading to his incarceration at Rebeuss prison. During his detention, Mbaye experienced health issues, leading to his transfer to the special ward of Aristide Le Dantec Hospital. Medical reports indicated that no prison facility could adequately manage his severe sleep apnea. A provisional release order under judicial supervision was obtained on December 31, 2025, but was overturned on appeal.
